Momentum App: a new era of Emergency Management Service
Ticino Cuore Foundation, together with its partners, has published on Medical Journal Resuscitation a report which compared the average time to reach the emergency site for First Responder through SMS (Short Message Service) or by using a mobile application-based alert system, the Momentum App.
The Case Study
The Ticino Registry of Cardiac Arrest collects all data about out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) occurring in The Canton of Ticino. During the period in which the analysis has been conducted, 593 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurred in Ticino. So, in 198 cases the notification to the First Responder network was sent via SMS; meanwhile, in 134 cases the notification to the First Responder was sent by push notification through via mobile APP. Another important datum that has been reported during the investigation is the medium time that the First Responder/Lay Responder need to arrive on scene. Using the Momentum App, the average time to reach the site was significantly reduced to 3.5 minutes, meanwhile if compared with SMS-based system, they needed 5.6 minutes to reach it.
Momentum improves EMS
The mobile APP system is highly efficient in the recruitment of first responders, significantly reducing the time to the initiation of CPR thus increasing survival rates. In Ticino, thanks to Ticino Cuore Foundation, on a population of over 353,000 people, 1% of the them is enrolled in the First Responder network of the Ticino Cuore Foundation. A number of people, which actively contribute to increase significantly the proportion of First Responder arriving first on the scene (70% vs 15%) and who helps the Canton Ticino to have a higher survival rate.
